Chapter 19

Tiffany stood with her arms crossed, studying me. Letting out a dramatic sigh, she dropped down beside me on the bed.

“You do know Tony, right? Please tell me you did at least that much research into the family you’re trying to claim.”

I felt myself blush. I hadn’t known about any of them until after I decided to make myself one of them. “Of, course,” I said. No need to admit just how unprepared I’d been.

Tiffany narrowed her eyes, looking unconvinced. “Well, did you happen to know Tony and I dated for a while?” My eyes widened at her confession, and I shook my head. Was there anyone the girl hadn’t dated?

“Yeah,” she let out a short laugh, “I didn’t think so. All it took was a quick text to him while you were trying to convince everyone your dad had married into the family to find out that was a load of BS. So, I’ll ask again, who are you? Tony’s eager to find out all about his new step-sister.”

My stomach tossed and threatened to eject the few bites of crème brûlée I’d eaten. “What do you want?” I asked, nibbling on my lower lip.

“For now, I just want the truth.”

Standing, I crossed my arms across my protesting stomach. A dozen lies ran through my head. I bit my lip and tilted my head as I tried one on her. “I’m an undercover agent working for a secret intelligence agency?”

Tiffany burst out laughing. “Oh, wow!” She wiped at the tears pouring from the corners of her eyes. “Please don’t tell me that’s the best you can come up with. You’re a terrible liar.”

My face shifted to a pout. “I am not!” I shook my head, surprised at my words. How had I gotten to the point that I wanted to be known as a “great liar?” Maybe it was best to have my secret exposed now before I managed to do anything even more stupid.

Tiffany was still giggling, and I gritted my teeth.

“I wanted to fit in,” I said harshly. “For once, I wanted to fit in.”

That stopped her laughter cold, and she squinted at me. “How did you think pretending to be a Grayson would help you fit in?”

“Exactly the way it has,” I snapped at her. “I don’t come from money like all of you. My parents work for Mrs. Grayson, and she’s the only reason I can afford to go to Stratmore.”

I blinked at the ceiling before dropping my eyes to Tiffany. “Would you have so much as talked to me if you’d known my parents didn’t own a mansion, or have trust funds, or run huge companies?”

With her expression unreadable, Tiffany finally shrugged. “Probably not,” she admitted. “I still don’t understand why you lied about who you are though.”

“Don’t you?” I raised my voice and spread my hands at my sides. “Maybe because I wanted to have people to talk to at school, and get invited to parties like this, and even wind up with my very first boyfriend.
